Our voice relies on the healthy vibration in the mucosal layer of the vocal folds.
Hydration plays an important role in this healthy vibration.
Hydration is better with 0.9% saline, this isotonic fluid matches the fluid properties in the cells of our body. A nebuliser will allow the most effective lubrication of the larynx surface, as the steam travels toward the throat.
Nebulizers work by creating a mist of droplets that are suspended in a gas which can be useful for airway hydration and medication delivery. Different types exist such as jet, spinning disc, and ultrasonic nebulizers. Jet nebulizers take high pressure gas and use a venturi to cause a pressure differential, which draws liquid from the reservoir to the gas. This causes the liquid to be broken apart into a spray. Spinning disc nebulizers use centrifugal forces to produce microdroplets by drawing water onto a rotating disc. Ultrasonic nebulizers, like the U-cali Nebulizer, use high-frequency vibrations to create a mist. The size of the droplets that are created dictate where in the respiratory system they will reach. For example, greater than 5-μm (micrometer / micron) droplets are likely to be deposited in the main airways, which can increase resistance to flow. Sterile water must always be used because these droplets are ideal carriers for microbes. And it is always important to clean the device and let it dry between uses. That is why our U-cali Nebulizer is easy to clean and take apart.
Temperature of the mist is also important, recommendations for treatment of viruses or inflammations can be given. Many viruses can cause the common cold. Rhinoviruses are the most common cause and are responsible for more than half  of all colds and cold-like illnesses. Rhinovirus infections typically result in mild cold-like symptoms. Some research suggests that rhinoviruses may replicate more efficiently at temperatures lower than 37°C, or 98.6°F, which is the average core body temperature in humans. The temperature inside the nasal cavity is approximately 33°C (91.4°F), which may make it an ideal breeding ground for rhinoviruses.
This 2016 study examined whether or not variations in temperatures and humidity led to a higher risk of rhinovirus infection. The researchers found that decreases in both temperature and humidity over a 3-day period increased the risk of rhinovirus infections in participants.
Influenza viruses, which cause the flu, may also survive and spread more easily in cold and dry air. One study in guinea pigs suggests that the ideal temperature for the influenza virus to spread is 5°C (41°F).
The discussion of warm versus cold steam is yet to be determined and seems to vary between personal preference and individual needs. For example, hot steam during inflammation in the pharynx or larynx may escalate irritation, however hot steam is good for some viruses that cause a runny nose, and cannot survive in hot temperatures, so it is important to find the ideal conditions for your needs. Our U-Cali Nebulizer allows you to choose between warm or cold steam at each moment.
